Causes of Hair Loss in Women

While it’s normal to lose about 80 hairs a day, causes of hair loss could have another reason.

Medical

Abnormal hair loss might be related to an illness such as diabetes or lupus.  If you’re worried, make an appointment with your doctor so the illness can be treated.

Thyroid problems are often the cause of abnormal hair loss.  Your thyroid is responsible for regulating your hormones. If your thyroid is under or over active, hair loss could be a sign.

Severe dieting can also be the cause of hair loss. When you’re no longer eating properly, your body doesn’t receive the nutrients it needs.

Commercial shampoos, conditioners, gels and mousses can cause havoc with your hair. Read the label on the hair care products you use. If it’s based on alcohol, the product can dry out your hair, causing it to break.

Hair loss can also be caused by frequent coloring and straightening of hair. Both contain harmful chemicals that put the hair follicles under stress.

The damage of styling tools is not to be underestimated either. Repeated use of blow dryers, flat irons, curling irons and hot rollers, might lead to hair loss. It is infinitely better to let your hair air dry, or if you have to use a blow dryer, use the coolest setting.

Constantly keeping your hair tied up in a bun or ponytail can also lead to hair loss. The tension of these hair styles might cause hair to break over time.

Forget the myth that 100 brush strokes a day will give you shiny hair. That much brushing will damage your hair and scalp.

Pay attention to how you treat your hair. Inferior hair care products along with bad habits could well be the cause of your shedding.
